Japanese Property Size Decoder

Japanese listings use 畳 (jō), 坪 (tsubo) and ㎡. Type what the listing says — get it in the units you actually understand, plus a feel for how big it really is.

From a Japanese listing

Tatami size varies by region — the same “6畳” can differ by 15%+. Listings legally must also show ㎡.

⚠️ Before you trust a number

  • ㎡ is the legal size. 畳/坪 are traditional — always cross-check the ㎡ figure.
  • 専有面積 vs 壁芯: Japan often measures from wall-center (壁芯), so usable space is a bit smaller than listed.
  • 坪 equals the Korean 평 — the same unit (≈3.3058㎡).
